昨日、めでたく7年目の結婚記念日を迎えることができました。仕事を少し早めに切り上げて、子供たちをシッターさんに預けた後、モントゴメリー（アラバマの州都）で夕食。味覚に優れたインターンに教えたもらったシーフード・レストラン、月曜の夜7時前なのに満席！さすがに不景気でも、おいしい所は繁盛してるのね。ドイツのハノーバーで知り合った10年半前、そしてサンディエゴで書類にサインした7年前。昨日のような、遠い昔のような。健康な子供たち2人に囲まれ、好きな仕事をさせてもらって、四六時中仲良く、というわけにはいかないけれど（本当のところ）、いいパートナーにめぐまれ、幸せな結婚生活だな、と思う。ま、この感謝の気持ちを忘れずに、テメスゲンをもっと大切に・・・とは思うのだけれど、ごめんごめん、彼の自立心にかまけて、自分のことは自分でやってもらってもらってます。あ、私の分まで洗濯物たたんでくれるな、よく。でも、彼のほうが掃除も洗濯物をたたむのも上手だからね。ま、得意な人がやるということで、我が家は成り立ってる（!?!）か。
毎日仕事、家事、育児に追われて、ゆっくり二人で話す時間もないんだけど、こうやってたまに、お互いへの感謝の気持ちを確認、表現できたらな、と思う。

はじめてのお稽古事 Swimming Lessons
7月末、少し仕事時間に余裕のある夏休み中に、ミーシャとリヤのスイミングレッスンを申し込んだ。スイミング・レッスンといっても、WATERBABYと名のあるとおり、本格的な泳ぎではないけれど、もっと水に慣れてくれたらな、というところ。2週間集中ということで、月から木まで週4回、保育所へのお迎えの後、車の中で少しおやつやフルーツを食べながらジムに直行。実際のレッスンは30分なんだけど、前後の着せ替えがね・・・時間がかかるんだな。だって、ロッカー室でかくれんぼごっこが始まるから。一人で着替えられるテメスゲンは、私たちが出てくる間ロビーで優雅に新聞を読んでたっけ・・・毎日、家に着くのは夜8時近く。これは結構疲れたけれど、子供たちは大喜び。ミーシャの"Hold my hand, Mama, I can't swim!（泳げないから、手をつないで、ママ）"が、レッスンの終わり頃には "Watch me, I can swim!!（見て、私泳げるよ！）"に変わった。できないことは努力してできるようにしたらいい。ミーシャも少し分かったかな？

7月終わり

サンディエゴ旅行が終わり、たまった仕事を片付けたかと思ったら、ミーシャとリヤのスイミング教室が始まって、気がついたら明日で7月も終わり。今週から外科のローテーションを組んでもらっているので、久しぶりに「切った張った」している。いつもの外来と歯科を離れて、とても新鮮な感じ。テメスゲンも今週あった研究者たちのリサーチ・シンポジアムで、ポスター発表が3位に入選。去年暮れには彼の名前がＰＩになった初めての研究補助金がおり、春には大学からReseracher of the Yearで表彰を受け、タスキギーでなかなかエンジンがかけれなかった彼の研究も、ようやく成果を出し始めた。

Singer Misha Then and Now
Singer Misha NOW at 3 years 10 months: 保育所で学んだんだろう。この週末、ミーシャが私たちの聞いたことのない歌、「1週間の歌」と「一年の歌」を歌いだしたので、ビデオに撮った。
いやあ、それにしても「イヤーの歌」って・・・。 Singer Misha THEN at 2 years and 3-4 months, singing American, Japanese, and Ethiopian songs: (PENDING)そして思い出したのは、このビデオを買った1年半前、最初に撮ったクリップ。（後日更新）あー、懐かしい。新しい家に引っ越してすぐ、リヤが生まれる前のミーシャ、2歳3－4ヶ月の頃。ABCの歌を耳にタコができる位聞いたっけ。この頃、ほとんど英語で話しかけていた。この1年ほどは日本語を主に使うように心がけているのだが、たまに私とミーシャで日本語で会話して行動しはじめ（スーパーに買い物にいく、など）、気がついたらテメスゲンに伝えるのをすっかり忘れていて、彼は知らずにのんびり食事をとっているなど、家族がばらばらの行動になってしまうのもしばしば。でも彼女達は半分日本人、やっぱり日本語わかってもらいたいな。

Trip to San Diego
サンディエゴで過ごした2週間の夏休み、懐かしい面々に会い、成長した子供達と遊び、それぞれの近況を報告しあいながら、アラバマに引越してからの2年半を振り返るよい機会になった。ミーシャは友人宅、公園、ビーチ等、各場所で友達を作り、自分の世界を着実に広げていった。そのたくましさに関心しながら、友人たちの子育てを見て自らを反省する点も。2003年、ここがアメリカでのスタート地点だった。6年後、まさかアラバマに落ち着くとは思ってもみなかったけれど、Never Say Neverと、6月末で1周忌を迎えたスマヌナさんによく言われてたっけ。

in San Diego
Misha and I are currently visiting San Diego - our "hometown" in the states - from June 23. We have met our friends, attended the wedding, and visited the beach a few times already. Temesgen and Liya are coming on 7/1 to join us, and then we all leave on 7/7. It is my first time to be away from Liya, and it is so strange not to hear her giggles around. We miss you, Temesgen and Liya! But until you come, let us have all the fun!

10 Best places to live in USA

Auburn serves as a little oasis for the deep Southern Alabama with relatively liberal, international, and multi-cultural atmosphere. This article says the population of 50,000, but if we include adjacent city, Opelika, and the Lee county which are right next to Auburn, the population will be 100,000+. For this small university town, we have a good art museum, performance center, and other cultural events all year around (mostly free), and Auburn provides safe, yet affordable environment to live. The average selling price of the houses in Auburn is $210,763 as of April 09 ($271,108 April 08). The education system here also deserves 5 stars. The academic performance of Auburn High School students is well-recognized, and most of the graduates receive scholarships to colleges/universities. It certainly needs improvements in some areas, such as public transportation; however, I have to say I probably wouldn't have felt this comfortable if we were living in anywhere else in Deep South.
With all the good things said about Auburn, I still have to hold some doubt being nominated for No.2 for the best place to live in the whole nation. But it certainly makes us feel good to be recognized.
