アトランタ Atlanta

Taking 2 days off as Summer Interim Days, the Girls and I joined Temesgen's trip to Atlanta 2 weekends ago. Although I have been to Atlanta dozens of times (including my trip in 1996 as vet student), we never had a chance to sightsee the downtown in Atlanta. So I took the Girls to the Atlanta Aquariam, which is the largest acquariam in the world. And of course, reading the little info that the acrylics used for these huge tanks were manufacutured in Japan give me a bit of sense of pride.... 2日間のボーナス夏休暇をとって、テメスゲンのアトランタ出張に同行（テメスゲンは終日会議）。
Shark swimming 今回は大金（3人で70ドル程度）をはたいて初めてアトランタ水族館へ！興奮して次から次へと走っていくミーシャを追いかけ、2時間後には「ホテルに帰りたい」。えー、70ドル分まだ謳歌してない！とは、財布をもつ母の心の叫びです。

After a little nap at the hotel, we went to the Oympic Park. Misha had a blast at water fountain! (Liya had no interest)お昼寝の後は、歩いてオリンピック公園へ。この噴水は夏は子供達で一杯。噴水のショーもあるけど、それ以外の時間はプール状態。ミーシャももちろん合流、リヤは全く興味なし。
Hot summer days near water - gotta have Frozen Yogurt!ソフトクリーム満喫。あ、名古屋三越地下、ヤマギシのソフトクリームが食べたい・・・・
On Day 3, we went to IKEA - wish our house is a bit more well-decorated (sigh)最終日はホテルのジムで運動した後、大型家具販売店イケアへ。 Having lunch at IKEA restaurant (swedish meat balls, mashed potatoes, and chicken fingers)すぐ時間が経ってしまい、お腹が空いてきたので、イケアのレストランで昼食

Our Atlanta trip ended with dinner at Ethiopian restaurant. そして夕食はエチオピア料理。
いつも空港、買い物や用事を済ませにくるアトランタだけど、ダウンタウンの地図を見るとまだ見所たくさん。また来たいな。でも2時間70ドルは勘弁してくださーい！

Kids Fishing Rodeo

Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo was hosted in the Chamber County last Saturday, so I took our Girls for the drive and fun while Temesgen was working on the grants.釣り好きなミーシャのために、ジョージア州の湖で開催された子供の釣り大会に参加。Everybody listens to the rules prior to fishing
Baits were provided. Worms and chicken liver (for catfish - I learned this day). Ready to go!

Misha fishing, waiting, and waiting..... strangely enough, nobody seemed to have caught any catfish at this rodeo although 300+ catfish were released 2 days before. We all believe they had Nimo type of drama underneath and escaped all together....
Misha finally gave up on fishing and enjoys inflatables with water splash - who wouldn't enjoy this in the hot Alabamian summer!?!
Well, Liya wasn't interested in the water slide, but enjoyed hot dog with friends! Good ending, and all were happy!

Where did you learn that!?!

Kids learn lots of things whether parents like it or not. This is one of the things I have no idea where　Misha learned from: Modeling Pose. あまり流行ファッションに興味のない私から、どうしてこんな子が出来たのか、と疑問に思うことしばしば。ミーシャは着るものにこだわる。そしてモデルにでもなるのか、といったポーズの取りかた。これはキャンプ場にて。
Now look to the right. The other girl is also half-Japanese and has been on the cover of the local parent magazine.次は右向き。隣のお譲ちゃんも半分日本人で地元雑誌にものった可愛い子ちゃん。
How about this!?! What are you doing with crazy hair!?!なんで「すずめの巣」みたいな髪型からこんな覗き方をするのか。理解に苦しみます。
Of course, with all the Girls on the top of the car, they create fun wherever they go!友達と車の上に乗り込み、写真大会。どこにいても、いい友達といれば楽しいね。

A little surprise project by preschoolers at graduation ceremony.
ほんの20分位の式だったが、ミーシャのイントロ、歌、宣誓等、盛りだくさん。このダンスもその一つ。いつもだったら、練習してる歌や踊りは家でやるのに、この曲を練習してるなんて全然知らなかった。先生に「内緒だよ」って言われてたのかな!?!　最近になって、ようやくバレエをお稽古している気配が出てきた気がしますが・・・・どうでしょうか。これは担当の先生とクラスメート。先生のワンちゃんは私の元患者さん。Misha with teacher and classmate:Now off to Kindergarden - here she goes! Camping

Despite severe weather, we successfully completed 2 nights camping at West Point Lake, GA, again with our friends!　雨・暴風の中、再びキャンプに行ってきました。
凧揚げ：It was windy and cold, which we have never experienced before. So we decided not to rent a boat on Day 2, and did some activities around the campsite. Kite was a big hit!

いつもグリル当番：テメスゲン　Temesgen grilling beef, raised and butchered at Auburn University. We are in charge of grilling at camp. Family #2 does breakfast, and Family #3 prepares Japanese curry. This has been our routine since the first camping at Lake Martin.
みんなで覗き込んでいるのはセミ。今年は13年ぶりのセミ年とか。セミ嫌いの私は嬉しくない！Although we did not have to suffer from heat this time (we were actually shivering under the long sleeves), we were surrounded by tons of cicada! We heard every 13 years, there is a big year for cicada and this year happens to be the one. It was literally EVERYWHERE! Kids are observing the cicada, which they have never seen before.

6人用の新しいテント。出入り口はチャックじゃなくて、扉型になってて、1回毎チャックを閉めなくてもいい。ちょっぴり感動！　Weather forecast was severe storms in the area, and we were uncertain whether we should go until the last minute. It was fine in the morning, but rain was pouring on the way to the campsite around 6-7pm! And WIND! Campfire kept us warm, as well as our new tent (our previous tent was only for 3 people).

Oh by the way, we were attacked by ticks as well. Liya and I had one each on our belly, and friends also reported 2 & 4 ticks in each family. Oh well, we are living in the bug-heaven Alabama anyways. Looking forward to the next camp!　セミだけでなく、ダニにも刺された今回のキャンプ。帰宅後、リヤと私に一匹ずつ犬ダニを発見。いやあ、自然の中に行くということはこういうこともあるよね。それにしても、凍えるような寒いキャンプでした。長袖を入れ忘れた我が家は特にね（笑）。

エジプトに続いてリビア、シリアも政治紛争中、天災も宮城大震災、アラバマの竜巻へと続く。「日本を忘れたみたいに、竜巻も忘れ去られる」と、竜巻の被害者が新聞記事でコメントしていた。トップニュースがどんどん変わると共に、人の関心も変わる。関東大震災の日、毎年学校で避難訓練をしたように、今回の宮城大震災も何か記念日にならないかな。

Presents for Mom

母の日のプレゼント。こっそり内緒にしておく約束だったようだけど、獣医学科の授賞式があった金曜夜10時頃帰宅すると、ミーシャがのそのそと起きてきて、「内緒なんだけどママにプレゼント買ったよ」と耳打ち。「プレゼントが何かは言えないけど、パパ達とみんなでJCPennyに行ったんだ」とどんどん話が進む。だめじゃーん、と後で散々テメスゲンに言われたミーシャでした。このかわいい袋は、もちろんミーシャ選択。
デイケアより。リヤ、いくらなんでもこの歳はありえないんじゃないの!?!　そして、「好きな色はピンク」だったことは、私の一生で一度もありません！幼稚園の頃、「女の子の色じゃない」と言われながらも青色の靴をずっと履いてたくらいなんだから。
これもデイケア。ミーシャの作品には素敵な詩が付いてました。

カードに居候さんの名前（ブラハノ）までちゃんと書き入れるほど、彼が好きなミーシャ。その彼も、弟の手配で仕事が見つかり、明日の朝アトランタから飛行機でメリーランドへ向かいます。我が家で生まれて初めて電子レンジ、洗濯機を使った彼。食べ物の好き嫌いも全く無く、洗い物、洗濯の取り込み、庭仕事等も率先して自分からやってくれ、助かりました。ミーシャもリヤも、彼がいなくなったら寂しがるだろうな。「アメリカは天国」と希望を持ってきた彼に、これからの幸運を願いたいと思います。

Happy Mother's Day!

Belated Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers of all sorts!
"Breakfast with Mom" at their daycare　デイケア恒例の母の日、朝食会。ママの会話は夏から始まる保育園（1年のみ）の話題でもちきり。
5歳児のクラスともなると、ママ達との食事も早々に、ママの携帯ゲームにみんな真剣。
Practice for the "graduation ceremony" from day care:Pledge of Allegiance デイケアは学校ではないので、卒業という言葉はおかしいと思うのだが、一応今週木曜日に卒業式が行われる予定。これはその練習、卒業生みんなでアメリカ国民としての「忠誠の誓い」を暗唱しているところ。あー、ミーシャは本当にアメリカ人として育つんだな、と思った瞬間でした。

創設以来の伝統、母の日に行われるタスキギーの卒業式も来年から土曜日に変わるとか。来年からは家でブランチできるかな。感謝されるほど何も出来ていないし、毎日怒ってばかりの気がしますが・・・ま、とりあえず、甘えてお祝いさせてもらいましょう。皆さんもよい母の日を過ごせましたか？

Dental Wet Lab

This was a group photo of the participants and guests who attended the canine dental wet lab (dental radiography and extraction) at our school. It was an honor for us to have a board certified dentist as well as certified dental technician. I was a bit under pressure to organize this lab, but I was so glad that things went well and everybody had so much fun learning.

Brush your 4-legged kids' teeth daily - otherwise, you might need my help :-)

2月からイリノイ大学の歯科講義をネットで受け、試験を合格したメンバー（学生希望者と教授陣）で、4月終わりに歯科実習を行った。獣医歯科専門医を招待して3時間、手術とレントゲンを学んだのだが、この実習の準備を担当したので、勉強できたというよりも、実習が無事終わったことに安堵感。この写真は実習最後に記念で取ったもの。今度の日曜で4年生は卒業、すぐ夏講習は始まる。里帰りの夢はこの夏かなわなかったけど、少し夏休み、取れるかな!?!

Bye Bye Jeep

Finally the time has come to say good-bye to our Jeep Cherokee . We have been considering for several months and decided to trade this in for Toyota SUV on the Easter Weekend. I always loved the design of this car (not the mechanic part, of course), but repairs have costed us significantly over the last 3 years. Good bye "Big Car" - hope you will find a nice home soon!

リヤが生まれる直前に買ったジープ・チェロキーに、とうとうお別れの時が来た。高校生の時、黒のラングラーを見てからずっとジープに憧れていたのを知ってたテメスゲンが、「夢だったんだから」と、高温のアラバマにそぐわないラングラーの代わりに、チェロキーを薦めてくれたのが3年前。我が家初めての2号車だった。見てくれは今でも気に入っているが、修理に頭を悩ませ、しかもまたいつどこがおかしくなるか分からない不安（アメリカ車の運命）が付きまとったため、とうとう買取してもらって、トヨタ車を購入することになった。車は消耗品で、購入時価格から売値が上がることはまずなく、新車未使用でも1年経つと価格が2-3割下がると、アメリカでは言われているため、今回のトヨタ車ももちろん中古。でもいつでも走ってくれる安心感はたっぷり。買い取ったもらったジープも、誰かにかわいがってもらえるといいな。

復活祭 EASTER

これは復活祭前日にあった、誕生日会のカップケーキ。クリームから下はお手製だけど、上は市販のお菓子だそうで、色が華やかでかわいい。裏庭にプールがセットアップされてて、子供達もとっても楽しそうでした。

お庭に隠してあるプラスチック製を探します。
工作が得意なこのママが用意してくれた、卵型貯金箱を色付けします。

エッグ・ハントはデイケア、フェローシップでも開かれ、子供達は極度の砂糖漬け状態。あー、また虫歯ができないといいけどな。小児歯科の定期健診は2週間後です。

Garden Project

This past weekend, we finally had some time to work on our garden. These seedlings are outside - some planted, others still in pots. Tomatoes are slowly but surely growing in yorgurt containers. This year, we have Chocolate cherry, Flamingos, Nonna and one regular tomatoes. Three different types of bell peppers are also growing. Japanese eggplants and swiss chards did not make it once transplanted in soil, so we are re-doing eggplants. We are not too worried for slow start this year - it is still 1st week of May. We have many more HOT days to come :-)

種から殆ど育てているため、今年は遅いスタートの野菜畑。今のところ、3月に植えたエンドウやレタス、毎年戻ってくるハーブを収穫してます。この写真は4月中旬のもの。今は全部外にあります。ようやくこの週末にまとまった時間が取れたので、長ネギ、にんじん、オクラ（第2陣）の種まきし、ささぎを植え替えました。各数種類あるトマトやピーマンも、少しずつ鉢で成長。5月中旬には畑に移せるかな?!?　もどかしくもあるけど、苗では手に入らない種類も多いので、地道に今年はやろうと思ってます。
