Oregon Trail

Dear readers, I am about to tell you about the all famous Oregon trail that happened at my school. Okay, so you should know about the Oregon Trail. For those who do not know about the Oregon Trail, it was pioneers who wanted a try at the west. now back in the olden days, the west was a harsh place. Many pioneers died along the way. Hardships like crossing rivers, rattlesnake nest, cholera, etc. When the pioneers got to Oregon, many people had died. They made camp by forming a wagon circle. Like a circle made out of wagons. They put their live cattle in the circle so that Native Americans and coyotes wouldn't eat the live cattle. Many Native Americans had helped the pioneers. They also said that they must reach Independent Rock by Independent Day. When they did reach Independent Rock, they signed their name on the rock. The names still remain there today. Anyways, when we did the Oregon Trail, we did a little nature trail in our property. The teachers had put pictures of animals along the way to show us the animals we would've saw when we were in the Oregon Trail. We saw many graves along the way, most of them cardboard. There were Hardships like no other hardships like your youngest one getting bitten by rattlesnakes, or you losing your wagon on a rock called Devils' Spine or something.My mom carried the wagon when we lost it though. When we got to Oregon, we got our wagon and started eating all the snacks that we had left on the wagon. Then we started playing games and made dollies and played games, just like the olden days.

Selma 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday

Dear Readers, I am going to tell you about the day I went to Selma for the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday. I thought it was a terrible thought, people being beaten up, children and women also getting hurt. I saw all kinds of Military people*, but never the president. Not until the end. It took them three hours, but it was worth the wait. There were limousines every where when Barack Obama came. After we saw the president, my mom convinced me and Liya to cross the bridge. We took many pictures, and I actually enjoyed myself there. I liked walking over the bridge, but I was afraid of heights, so I tempted myself I was going to be okay. But when I thought about it, everybody in my family was enjoying this. I did like walking on the bridge. I liked taking the photos, and I loved being there with my whole family. Goodbye, everybody! 50年前の1965年、黒人の公民権運動で大きな変化を生み出したこのエドモンド橋。人種差別に抗議するため、この橋のあるアラバマ州セルマ市から州都のモントゴメリーまで54マイル（87キロ）を行進する非暴力な黒人達に向かって、州警察官が催涙ガスを投げ、釘のついた棍棒などで非人道的に攻撃し、後に「Bloody Sunday　(血の日曜日）」と呼ばれる世界的なニュースになった。その後、攻撃的な姿勢をやめないアラバマ州知事に対し、行進する人達を保護するため、ジョンソン大統領が陸軍、FBI等を投入して、最初150名ほどではじまった行進が、3回目にしてようやくセルマを抜け、最後には25,000人に膨れ上がり、5日後にモントゴメリーの州議会に達した。そしてその年の後半、ジョンソン大統領が投票権法にサインして、黒人にも投票権が与えられるようになった。（実際には、黒人にも投票権がそれ以前もあったのだが、さまざまの理由で拒否されていた。知り合いの獣医放射線学教授も、博士号を持っていたにも関わらず、目の前のビンに入ったキャンディーの数を聞かれ、正確に答えられなかったため、「非識字」という理由で投票権を拒否された。）

50周年記念のこの日に、この橋を家族で渡ろう、という計画でセルマにいったものの、ちょうどオバマ大統領の訪問と重なり、道が閉鎖。車のラジオで、この橋の向こう側にいるオバマさんのスピーチを聞き、待つこと3時間。途中でもうアトランタに出発しよう、というギブ・アップの頃には時遅し。道が完全にロック・ダウン。出れない！もう車で本でも読んで待とうか・・・と橋に背中をむけて歩き出したそのとき！

機動隊に先導されて遂に現れた、オバマさん！

素直に感動。50年前、叩かれても、催涙ガスをかけれられてもひるまなかった人達のおかげで、私達も子供達の教育や安全の心配をしなくてもいい。子を持つ親としては、オバマさんも同じ意見だと思う。

上の写真は行進のフィナーレ、州議会の前で取ったもの。今年は150名ほどが、昨日行進を終え、州議会の前にあるデキスター教会（キング牧師がアトランタの教会に就任する前に働いていた教会）の集会で締めくくられた。セルマでもこの州議会周辺でも、たくさんの警官がいたけど、白人黒人混合の配置で、セルマでは警官達と写真を取っている人がたくさんいた。白人警官対黒人市民との闘争から50年、ホワイトハウスには初の黒人大統領家族が住んでいる。自分の意思で移住した私達には計り知れないほどの痛み、そして喜びに満ちた公民権の歴史。先人たちの勇気と努力を、次の世代にも忘れずに伝えていきたいと思う。

Ballet Fest 2015

Dear Readers, I am telling you about my tech rehearsal and my real performance. I had to wake up at 7:00 for my tech rehearsal. But I was late because my mom kept on getting lost when she had directions! But I found the place in the nick of time. I was just in time to have a little fun with my friends! Me and some other kids dared Hope and Lauren to press the elevator door, but we couldn't because somebody else below would hit the button. Then it was time for us to change into our costume. I changed very quickly because I was very eager to be in the spotlights. After the tech rehearsal was over, I went back to my families hotel room and checked out. Then I had to go back at 1:00 to start putting on makeup and such. Then when I went onstage, I was hit with a bright light, and all I saw was peoples' faces in the crowd. After it was over, I changed into my regular clothes and watched the very last one. I thought it was the best of the best. Not in front of mine, of course, but I thought it was good. Then when I was really leaving, my mom told me there was a blind girl in the dance. I was like all gasping at my mom. Then she showed me where the blind girl was. After I left, I drank a whole bottle of Sprite them went to an Israeli deli/bakery. I thought it was delicious. Then I left to journey to home. 年が明けてすぐ、ダンススタジオの先生から「ミーシャがアトランタで開かれるダンス祭招待メンバーに選ばれたので、可能ならぜひレッスンに参加させてください」とメールが届いた。とりあえず無料でレッスンが受けれて舞台にも上らせてもらえる、ということでテメスゲンを説得。そして2ヶ月の練習を経て、先週日曜日、舞台に出させていただいた。ジョージアをはじめ、テネシー、サウス・カロライナ、フロリダ、そしてアラバマの30－40スタジオが参加。チケットを買って、観客席から見させてもらったが、なんともレベルの高いこと！ミーシャ達が、おままごとレベルに見えてしまうが（素人の発言で失礼！）、ハイ・レベルの人達と楽屋・舞台を共有させてもらう、というのも経験のうちだと思う。日曜に披露された25エントリーの中、テメスゲンと私が感動したのは、そのハイ･レベルな出場者の中にまじって、ダウン症の女性だけのチーム、そして盲目の女の子がステージの中心で踊る２演目が披露されたこと。Impact Dance of Atlantaというダンス・スタジオからの出場。特に盲目の女の子のダンスなんて、遠くから鑑賞していたら、分からなかったと思う。この2演目、観客席はスタンディング・オべーション！アメリカのこういうところ、素敵だなと思う。人の可能性を信じて、情熱と献身を捧げる。駐車場で、盲目の女の子がお父さんらしき人に肩車されて、幸せそうに笑っている姿を見て、また感動。次の目標に向かって、またがんばってもらいたい。そしてその後は、ペッコペコにすいたお腹をかかえて、イスラエル料理のお店へ。みんな心身ともに大満足で帰路に向かいました：チャンチャン！

Let The Chili Contest Begin!

Dear Readers, Today, I will tell you about the chili contest my mom entered in. The chili contest was to see who had the:Zestiest, Best Meat, Best Vegetarian, and Most Creative chili. My mom won the Zestiest. She did warn me that her chili would be a little spicy. I thought it was SUPER SPICY!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were all mixed up, so you wouldn't know who's was who's. I knew my mom's chili was #2. I saw the tag when she came in. There were vegetarian and meat. Mostly meat was there, and just a few vegetarian. I knew I would have to wait, so I brought a book with me. After I finished tasting and voting, I volunteered to serve the chili, but there only was a few cups left. Then I noticed, there was also a cornbread contest at the back! I raced there and grabbed my plate. I grabbed everything I thought was tasty. Then again, I noticed that there were a couple kids playing at the front, so I raced there too. I started playing with a baby. She started talking about bats, and I couldn't really hear her. I only nodded when I knew she was done with her sentence. Then I went over and started playing with the older kids. I played hide-and-go-seek with Nathan, Liya, and Jackson later on. Then I started playing Bubblegum, Bubblegum, in a dish with Laura, Jackson, Nathan, and Liya. Then we started playing Crocodile. Then Nathan said he was leaving soon, and we had to make Nathan the Crocodile. Then I left. 鬼は外

2011年から毎年友人達と企画する節分、今年は友人宅で。友人たちがお餅やお寿司を用意してくれ、話題は90年代の音楽やら恋愛やら占いやら日米の違いやら。「それ、あったねー」が連発する、懐かしさにあふれた楽しい夜でした。最初の節分開催は2011年、ここをclick、2012年はここ, 2013年は書き忘れたようで、2014年はこちら。 大学院の授業も今回は少し控えめにして、バランスよく始まった2015年。幸せだな、と感じることの多い日々です。自分にはもったいない伴侶に出会い、元気で健康に育つ娘たちに囲まれ、好きな事を仕事にして生活ができ、素敵な人たちに出会い、毎日生みたての鶏卵を得る。英語でよく、blessings（神や自然の恩恵）といいますが、自分の力ではないたくさんの要素・糸が、人生を豊かに、幸せにしてくれることに心から感謝です。

Welcome 2015

　2015年1月も残り10日程、遅ればせながら、明けましておめでとうございます。日本から送られた年賀状を、昔を懐かしく思い出しながら読んでいます。どうもありがとう。2014年、一言でたとえるのは難しいですが、家族それぞれ、目標に向かって進む、有意義な一年でした。健康で一年を過ごせた事は何よりですが、私は夏以降、翻訳・大学院の授業（眼科と生物医学統計）・大学の仕事等に、娘たちのリハーサルが重なり、料理や畑仕事をする（楽しむ）暇もなく、ウェストラインと白髪の数がぐんと増えた2014年後半だったと思います。その点は反省。2014年を振り返り、思い出に残っていることを、忘れる前に羅列したいと思います。（順不同） １．娘たちが「くるみ割り人形」に参加させてもらったこと：舞台用お化粧等、新しい事を母娘ともども体験させていただきました。娘たちがどんどん、自分たちの枠以外のことに挑戦して、成長していく姿を横で見ることができ、本当に嬉しく思いました。 ２．理矢がモンテスーリの学校を卒業、公立の小学校へ入学。親善大使みたいな役をやらせてもらってます。2014年、ミーシャに続き、理矢もついに眼鏡デビュー。 ３．ミーシャも学校大好き。合唱隊に入りました。 ４．テメスゲンが末弟の大学卒業のため、エチオピアへ単身3週間。家族は皆元気そうです。 ５．テメスゲンが獣医学部で研究者の賞をもらいました。前にも、大学からResearcher of the Yearを2年連続でもらいましたが、今回は学部内での受賞だったので、認知度が高かったような気がします。彼はエチオピア人同僚2人と、去年、微生物関連の特許も取りました。 ６．私のほうは、教えることと、大学院の方に力を入れて、自分の歯科スキルアップに2012・2013年と、あまり時間を取れなかったので、2014年は意図的に時間をとり、テネシー、ミズーリ、それからバーミンガム（アラバマ）の先生達のところで勉強させてもらうことができました。スキル・アップしたかどうかは別にして、新しいことを見る・試していると心がわくわくします。 ７．2014年、プライベート旅の思い出の一番は、娘たちと3人で行った、走行3274.8マイル（5240キロ）のドライブ旅行。愛車プリウスちゃんと。この距離を走っても、ガス代は200ドル程度。友人のいるメイン州を目的地に、個々の希望（理矢：Green Lady（自由の女神）、ミーシャ：ナイアガラの滝、私：ニューヨーク近辺の友人との再会）を寄り道先に設定。親切な友人たちのはからい等で、本当に楽しい旅でした。地図・GPS（ナビ）を昼夜見ながら、自動車後部は毎日ミュージカル状態。旅行前に行ったミュージカル・キャンプ（夏期講習みたいなもの）で習った演目すべて、じっくり聞かせていただきました。GPSの音声がきこえない！大学時代、よくアパートで世界地図をみながら旅を空想してると、夜がどんどん更けていったっけ。 毎日が変化のチャンスだと思うので、「新年の目標」みたいなものは、もう長年決めていませんが、もう人生半ば過ぎたし、人生後半は物に限らず、精神的なものを含め、無駄なものを貯めないように、選択を意識して、無駄なものは処理・なくしながら、すごしたいと思います。（その筆頭は腹部脂肪！）みなさんも、各自新年に対して思うことがあるでしょうが、健康でいい一年を過ごせるよう、アラバマから願っています。 注：写真は、昔、妹とおせち料理教室に行ったときにつくったおせち料理です。イメージだけでも新年気分を。

Nutcracker 千秋楽

Dear Readers, I am going to tell you about the ending of the famous Nutcracker. When I came back, I had a total meltdown about all my friends. I am going to have to convince Daddy that I want to go to the Nutcracker next year. The Nutcracker is a famouse play which has no voices. If you have seen it, you should get a copy of it because you can watch it all over again. I was an Angle and a Little Party girl. They are both important parts because they are in different scenes. I think the adults were all funny and not taking the Nucracker seriously, until the preformance. Backstage is a very busy place because we have to do the prayer and the squeeze. Backstage, we have to change and change, but yesterday was different because we had to turn in our costumes. But all the hard work paid off because at the end, we got dumped with fake snow and had a great time. I and Liya got 2 bouquets of flowers.
