Summary of June 2008

Again and again, the month of June just flied.

My work slowed down just a little bit in the month of June, and I had time to take online CE course on veterinary dentistry, which was very informative. Temesgen is doing well, catching up with some lab work during the summer break. Both girls are growing well, as you can see on the top photo.
Here are some remarks of June 2008.

1. Liya
She has really grown! She was 13 pounds 4 ounses in mid-June, and we can tell her motor controls are developing quickly. She wants to touch you, watches your lips when you speak to her, tries to grab everything nearby... it is getting really hard to nurse her AND do something (read magazines, eat, etc... well, let's call it multi-tasking!), or nurse in public, since she does not want to be under the nursing cover any more. She wants to see around. Thanks to our wonderful babysitter, Suwaiba, she remains a very healthy baby.

Everybody who saw her recently said she dramatically changed. She looked 100% like Temesgen in early months (my Department Head even said I do not need any DNA test for paternity of Liya - it is obviousthat Temesgen is her father!), and now she reminds us of Misha a lot. She has a slightly darker skin tone and shorter hair, compared with Misha at her age; however they really look alike now.

2. Misha
It was amazing how her language developed in the month of June. All of sudden (seems like to me), she started using prepositions and other "extra" words.
For example,
"I want to do it" --> " I want to do it myself"
"I want to go" --> " I want to go with you"
"I got it" --> " I got it for you, Mama"

However, she seems confused with be-verbs and do-verbs sometimes. She says "I am tired" but she also says "I do not tired." It is really interesting to see her language development.
By the way, she does understand Japanese since I spoke and read to her; however her main language remains English. She definitely responds much quicker when spoken in English. My brother also noticed that Misha enjoys English DVDs a lot more, even if the characters are dubbed (eg. Sesame street in English vs. Sesame Street in Japanese).
Photo above: Misha reading a Japanese book to Liya ( at least that is what Misha thinks)
3. Car accident: Someone, after a long day at work, hit our car from behind at a traffic light. Only Temesgen and Misha were in the car - they were on the way to go to his friend's house to watch the European Soccer Tournament. Fortunately nobody was injured and our car will be repaired by his insurance company. This was the very first car accident we have ever had in the states.
4. Garden
We started harvesting some vegetables and blueberries from our garden in June. Cherry tomatoes, okras, green beans, and snap peas are doing well, but we had a difficult time harvesting green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, collard green, and turnip due to the worms (Misha loved and enjoyed chasing butterflies, though). We finally used pesticides once in June, and it seems OK so far. Now that we know how hard it is to make it totally organic, we spend a lot more time washing green leaf vegetables from store, unless organic. I almost felt like we were growing these vegetables to feed worms after all!
June did not have major highlights but I am grateful for what we have.

Loss of our friend

Temesgen and I are very saddened by the news that our dear friend, Summanuna Togo, passed away in Ghana on June 30, 2008. He was survived by his wife, Rita, and two sons: Kofi Gilbert and Nunana. I spoke with Rita several times and the family seems to be coping with their suddon loss.

Summanuna was such a multi-talented person. First of all, he was very smart - he obtained masters in England, then PhD in biochemistry from Hiroshima University in Japan (he was fluent in Japanese) and did a few years of post-doc at the Burnham Institute in San Diego, where we met. He was a brother-figure to Temesgen, and his wife Rita was a sister-figure to me. He remains one of the remarkable people I have met in my life - his intelligence, personality, talents, and lots of stories to tell.... Life was not always easy in San Diego (or I should say "lives of foreign post-docs"), but we stayed close and supported each other as family. I really miss all the laughter we shared.

To commemorate his life and also to support his family, Temesgen and I are planning to collect monetary contribution from his friends in Japan and US to make his dream come true: The apartment complex he had designed. I remember seeing his architectural design on his computer in his apartment in San Diego, listening to his stories why he designed here this way, there that way... he looked so proud. So if anyone interested in contribution, please let us know. Summanuna is looking down on us with that big smile, for sure.

Summary of May 2008

May was another busy month - being on the floor full-time at clinic and also, Temesgen and I spent a lot of time on the work around the house. Both Misha and Liya are doing well. Misha now really speaks and holds conversations. The other day, she came running to me saying "Mama, Liya is crying. Are you going to nurse?" Sometimes, she says " Are you pumping?" - well, she is a future member for La Leche League and Breastfeeding Support group. When I say "Yes," she seems relieved and says "Oh, OK." She is a very thoughtful sister. This week, she brought Origami paper and asked me, "I want Swan." I made one but she said, "No, that is not Swan." I said "Oh, then what is it?" She replied - " It is a chicken!" Temesgen and I burst into laughing - well, ok it might look like chicken, but for Japanese, it is forever Swan, whatever you say and however it looks. Girl, you need to know more about where you come from.

Anyhow, here is a summary of May.

1.

Starting early May, we have been spending a lot of time in our backyard. We have created 'tentative' vegetable garden for this summer and planted tomatoes, green beans, sugar peas, carrots, herbs, bell peppers, collard greens, hot peppers, zucchinis, yellow squash, egg plants, lettuce, arugula, cucumbers... and some others that I cannot remember. There are lots to learn and try, but both Temesgen and I truly enjoy our garden project.

Blueberries are almost ready!

2.

This is Temesgen's part.... fixing some things around the house. He put a screen door for the patio and placed some gutter to collect rain water for our garden. And of course, Misha works as a little assistant.

3.Congratulations Uncle Frew!

Temesgen's brother, Frew, graduated from law school in Florida in May. Temesgen went there for his graduation as well as his wife and daughter (Naomi) from Virginia. The family can finally live together in Virginia - Congratulations for all of you!

4.Babysitter

Liya's babysitter, Sahar, went back to Egypt with the family in late May. She did such a wonderful job, and I truly miss her and her family. Misha misses playing with her daughter, too. But they were happy, so we are happy for them. Liya got a new babysitter in Tuskegee, and has been doing well. See you in Egypt, Sahar!

5.Sad News

1) Dave, a former owner of All Creatures Hospital where I worked as vet tech in 2003-2004, was attacked by a shark while swimming in Del Mar and passed away.
2) Former colleague of mine, a RVT at All Creatures, had a heart attack at work and pacemaker was placed. He is young (44 years old) and healthy before this incident.
3) Dr.Lea Ann Lucas, my psychology teacher in Misawa and dear friend, lost her father. He was a legend, and she said he looked peaceful and proud. He was 92 years old.
4) Temesgen's godfather had mild stroke in May. It was caught early, and he recovered well.

All our thoughts and prayers go to you all....

Every time I hear something like this, I always think I should live my life to the fullest and be nice to the people around me. But then here I am, nagging Temesgen for what he has not done (usually trivial things but important enough to annoy me....), telling Misha "NO!" countless times..... I am not learning..... OK Today is the brand new start.

No more nagging, smile, smile, smile....

Summary of April 2008

"New Mom's Brain" - well, I guess I am suffering from it at this moment. My brain goes blackout more often than once-in-a-while frequency and it just does not seem that I can write something decent, something meaningful this morning. Anyhow.... I will continue. It is hard to find some quiet time for myself these days.
April was a month of transition. I went back to work in the last week of March, only a couple of hours a day, then gradually shifted to full-time by the end of April. We drop off Liya at her babysitter first, then Misha at daycare, then go to work. My brother was here until mid-April, then he went to Mexico City for 2 weeks before going back to Japan. Liya and I spent a night at Atlanta with him when he had a one-night layover coming back from Mexico before leaving for Japan. We cannot imagine how our life would have been without him in the last 3 months. We would have survived somehow, but with much greater amount of stress and chaos for sure.

Here is a brief summary of April -

1. Liya
She is gaining weight adequately. She grew from 9 lb 7 oz in the beginning of April to over 11 lb by the end of the month. I am pumping at work, and the babysitter supplement it with formula as needed. I am trying to increase my milk supply as much as possible so that Liya does not have to take formula, so hopefully I can catch up with her demand soon.

2. Bye bye Contour

After 6 years, we finally had to say good-bye to our Ford Contour. This was Temesgen's 1st car (He got his 1st driver's license in San Diego in 2002) and the only car we had during our life in San Diego. We have so much memory with this car - both good and bad. This is the car that broke down on the way to our little honeymoon in August 02, and again broke down on the way to Las Vegas to celebrate my 30th birthday in 04 (that was really scary being in the car at night on the freeway in the heavy rain, while big trucks ran right next to you with full speed!), but also took us so many wonderful places for hiking and camping, then our life-changing move to 3,000+ miles trip to Alabama. Our children, Misha and Liya, also came home from hospital with this car. After all the repairs, it finally came down with a transmission problem and we decided to donate this car to a charity. And we know for sure, this car would never have lasted this long (96 model with 150,000 miles) without the excellent care of our mechanic in San Diego, Jorge (Toshimi-san's husband, now a master mechanic in Lexus). So thanks Contour and Jorge for all the wonderful memories!

3. Visit

Temesgen's long-time friend, who was first his student back in Ethiopia, visited us from New Orleans (photo: next to Temesgen). With another friend who moved here with his family in February (photo: in center with Misha), it is so nice to see Temesgen having a little Ethiopian community in Alabama. Three guys definitely had nice 'men-talk' over the weekend with beer, wine, and lots of food!

4. Good bye Uncle Hi-kun!

Photo: My brother with 2.5-month-old Liya at Atlanta Airport.

I always say that the best thing happened to me after Misha was born was Breastfeeding support group - where I found so many friends. This time, it was my brother coming here - no doubt about it.

We miss you (and wonderful pasta and soup, of course) so much!!

Summary of March 2008

Liya is now 8 weeks old. She was 9 lb 2oz last Thursday (7lb 2oz at birth), doing very well. She now smiles often, and it is getting a lot more fun to watch her. She sleeps well at night, which is one of the best things I love about her, to be honest with you all, and she is quite easy-going overall. I am not sure that is how she is, or it is because we are more relaxed as 2nd time parents. Either way, things are going a lot more smoothly as I expected, and I feel rested both physically and psychologically. Since I did not update the blog recently, I summarize our March events here.

March 3rd
Japanese Girl's Day
Uncle Hi-kun (my brother) prepared Sushi to celebrate Misha's 3rd Girls Day, and Liya's 1st.

Easter

City of Auburn hosts Easter Egg hunt every year - this year they prepared 22,000 eggs in the park. Now that she knows what egg hunt is, she really enjoyed it. Thanks to Auntie Debra in San Diego who sent her the cute tote bag with her initial on it! And also thanks to Irene, another good friend of us in La Jolla, who sent us 'special' cookies for Easter.

And whenever weather and time permit, we are out working on our still-unorganized backyard. So far we planted peach, persimmon, and blue berries. The persimmon tree, Japanese Fuyu Gaki, is to commemorate Liya's birth. I wanted to plant something relating to my roots, and since the climate here in Alabama reminds me of the one in Tokai region in Japan with hot and humid summer, I chose persimmon that is very common in my hometown area. We also planted some Ethiopian herbs as well. The picture below is Temesgen planting Georgia Bell Peach.

And this is my favorite moment.... to watch my two girls sleeping peacefully. Innocent, yet filled with hopes. This is the very reason why I want to do better as Mother, wife, woman, human being... whatever role I take in this world. As Megan, my friend and mom of beautiful twin in San Diego, once wrote in her blog, these precious little moments make our life truly worthy living for.

Flu season

The real flu season is here - at our house!

Misha got sick first, diagnozed as having influenza. Then it spread to my brother, and Temesgen.... With 2 sick men, one toddler running around, infant to nurse and take care of, translation deadline, and return-to-work date coming near, wow, now I should say it is quite overwhelming. I have my hands full! Hope it goes away soon.....

Big Sister Misha!

Although I cannot deny that a lot of attention has been paid to Liya, Misha has been adjusting well to her big sister role so far. I have to thank all the friends who included presents and cards to Misha, when they visit us or mail some gifts. And also having other adults at home (my brother, plus Temesgen's friend who recently got a job at Tuskegee and has been staying with us until finding an apartment) helps a lot.

Misha likes drawing very much and here is her favorite "face"! She is now almost perfect with big alphabet letters and ready for small ones. It is amazing how fast kids grow - only 2 1/2 old Misha already looks gigantic next to baby Liya. That reminds us how special this time is....
