実ってます！畑で野菜達が育っているのを見るのも幸せを感じるけれど、畑で取れたものを食する時はもっと幸せ！

Panama Beach City

Over the Memorial weekend, we drove down to Panama Beach City in Florida. It was a little over 200 miles away, and the beach was beautiful! We brought back some sea scallops, boat shrimps (which was caught that morning and was never frozen), red snapper, alligator meat (farm-raised), and boiled peanuts to enjoy with Freo and Genet, who could not join our trip. We have never tried boiled peanuts before but they are not bad at all. They have similar texture to that of boiled pinto beans. And as for alligator.... well, a bit fishy hard chicken, I would say. Not bad either. I cannot wait to explore the South more!




写真は先週末行ったフロリダのパナマ・ビーチ。私たちの住むオーバーンから約350キロほど南に下ったところにある。直通の高速道路がないため、あちこちぶらぶらしながらの楽しいドライブ旅行。南部名物、ゆでたピーナッツの看板が目立つ。食べてみると、塩茹でしたインゲン豆の風合い。辛めのスパイスが効いていて、意外においしい。

今回の旅は、いつも通り私の独断と偏見、「ミーシャに海を見せたい」ということで決行したのだが、ミーシャは大きな波に躊躇気味。白い砂浜での砂遊びの方がが気に入ったようだ。これまた気に入るだろうと思って連れていったアシカショーもいまいち。ふーん、親の勝手な希望と期待が先走ったようです。反省。


帰りには地元の海産物、そしてアリゲーター（小型のワニに似た生き物）のお肉も購入。翌日、海産物はスペインのパエリアに、そしてアリゲーターはフライになり、みんなで堪能。どれもなかなかおいしかった。アリゲーターは、ちょっと魚くさい鶏肉って感じかな。

アラバマに移って半年。試験がひと段落して、ようやく週末だけでも旅行にでかけられる余裕がでてきたのが嬉しい。さあ、今度はどこに行こうかな。地図とにらめっこして、想像するだけでもわくわくする。

Family Project

The agricultural department of Tuskegee University was generous enough to let faculty members have some piece of land to plant vegetables and fruits for this summer. The soil is already cultivated and irrigated, and they even give us plants for free! I always enjoyed gardening and it was one of my dreams to have my own vegetable garden, so here it comes, it is a beauty of living in Alabama!

A couple of weeks ago, Temesgen and I planted different kinds of beans (soy, green, waxy, etc), squash, different kinds of peppers, herbs, okras, tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, carrots, green onions, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, turnips, mustard green, kale, broccoli, etc. We picked our first harvest (some green leafy vegetables) yesterday and enjoyed it with our friend's family. Yam!

This is one thing I truly enjoy in my life - good conversation with families and true friends over nice meals. Yes, we had screams and spills here and there, so what! I sure enjoy having friends come over for meals.

写真は、タスキギー大学の農学部が無料で提供してくれた畑。さすがアラバマ、土地だけは豊富である。苗も農学部が育てたものを無料でもらえ、肥料もきちんと加えられた土地に、ビニールがかぶしてあり（黒色に写ってる部分）、その下にあるホースから水が出ている（＝水撒きの必要なし）という、至れり尽くせりの代物である。テメスゲンと二人、家で食べる野菜・献立を相談しながら苗を選び、共同作業で土に埋めた。昨日は畑から取れた葉野菜（ターニップとマスタード・グリーン）、バジルを使った料理で、友人の家族（エチオピアのお隣、スーダンの出身）をよんで最初の収穫を堪能した。太陽を浴びながら、テメスゲンと汗を流し育てた野菜は、やっぱりおいしい！スクワッシュ（緑色のズッキーニに似た野菜：写真）も育ってるし、食いしん坊の私はこれからが楽しみでしょうがない。友人達を誘って、バーベキュー・パーティーでもやろうかな。

前回のブログ投稿からはや2週間。我が家の近況報告もいろいろある。
１．ミーシャ：保育所でクラスメートに2回噛まれる！
２．テメスゲン：ニューオーリンズへの出張から戻って、次の実験に向けて計画案を書いてます。彼のニュー・オリンズ報告もお願いしてあるので、お楽しみに。
３．フレオ（弟）：運転免許の筆記試験合格！
４．ゲネット（奥さん）：仕事決定！歩いていける近所のファースト・フードでがんばってます！
５．私：先週、州の獣医師免許試験に合格して（カリフォルニアに比べるとかなり簡単）、州免許取得！私はまだ馬の試験に合格してないため（9月追試予定）、タスキギー大学内でのみ通用する獣医免許だけれど、それでも初めてアメリカで獣医師として働けることになる。ちょっとずつ先に進んでるって感じね。

というわけで、テメスゲン一家は最近いいニュースで溢れてます。皆さんにも幸運のおすそ分けを！

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day, everyone! The photo on the left is a nice surprise gift I received from Misha, thanks to the help of Ms.Frances, Misha's teacher at her daycare. Since Temesgen is busy attending the graduation ceremony and leaving for New Orleans today (Sunday:Mother's Day), we had a little "date" last night while Freo and Genet watched Misha. Yes, my fellow mothers, we deserve this special day! Enjoy to the fullest - and of course, do not forget to thank our own mothers!



今年の母の日は、保育所のフランシス先生が子供達の手形、足型をあしらった素敵なプレゼントを用意してくれた。体力的にも精神的にも大変な仕事だろうに、私達を思ってくれるその気持ちがとても嬉しい。夜はフレオとゲネットにミーシャを頼んで、テメスゲンとデート（食事と映画）に出かけた。二人で出かけたのは、サンディエゴに住んでいた去年、子守を頼んでいたガブリエラさんにお願いして、テメスゲンの誕生日に乗馬と食事に出かけたのが最後。実に8ヶ月ぶりとなる。おでかけ中も会話の中心はミーシャのことだったけれど、こうやって二人で静かに（これキーワード！）話をしながら時間を過ごすと、帰る頃には「またしばらくいいママできるかな」という気分になる。

24時間365日いいママでいるのは大変だもの。働くママ、家にいるママ問わず、たまに夫婦で外に出て気分転換できるといいね。一年に一回の「母の日」、十分楽しんでください。

Summer is Here!

Now that summer is here, we have lots of outdoor events around Auburn. Last Sunday, we went to the Auburn cityfest filled with good live music (Remember American Idols: Ruben and Tyler are both from Alabama!)and food. Misha enjoyed dancing, running around, punching balloons and playing soccer (well, just kicking, of course) with Papa Temesgen and our friends' kids.

This past Friday, we went to a carnival and Misha got on her very first "Merry-Go-Around!" She was so excited and asked for more - she walked back there 3 times and pointed the horse - well, this is how it starts.... "Girl, it is fun to ride, but let's face the reality. We need 4 tickets each time and we cannot ride forever - let's enjoy one at a time." Is it too early for 19 month old toddler to understand this concept!?!

For the last week or so, we noticed that Misha has gained vocabulary at an amazing speed. The examples are "See you" "Hello" "Sorry" (she says So-yee) "Milk" (no sound of K though), "Alright" (no T sound), etc. Although she understands instructions in Japanese or Amharic (official Ethiopian language), all her words are English at this moment. We are highly interested in her language development - and of course, now we really have to watch our mouth!

My questions to the readers: What was your/your kids' first words?




私達の住むアラバマ州オーバーンは夏のイベントが盛りだくさん。先週の日曜日は市主催のシティー・フェスティバルに行ってきた。アメリカの高視聴率番組「アメリカン・アイドル」でも2回、チャンピオンを出しているアラバマ、さすがに生バンド（言い方古い!?!）も質が高い。ミーシャは公園を駆け回り、風船で遊んだりして嬉しそうだった。金曜日は仮説遊園地に行って、初めてのメリーゴーランド体験！その後ねだられて大変だったけれど、フレオとゲネットも初めての遊園地体験でみな大満足。私と弟、妹を遊園地や動物園に連れて行ってくれたのは、今は亡き大嶋のおじいちゃんだった。犬山遊園がお気に入りで、モノレールで着くと私達にチケットを買うお札を渡し、食べ物売り場でタバコをふかしながら、私達があちらこちら駆け回って乗り物を楽しんでるのを目を細めて満足そうに見ていた。そのおじいちゃんの1周忌が今月末。もうあの時間は戻ってこない、とネオン光る遊園地で、一人ちょっとしんみりしてしまった。

この3日ほど、ミーシャから言葉が次々とあふれ出している。注意して耳を傾けると、「アロー」（Hello)　「ミル」（Milk)　「アウ・アー・ユー」（How　are　you）　「シーユー」（See you)　「オーライ」（Alright)「ソーィー」（Sorry)「アイ」（Eye)・・・あれまあれま、こんなに急にボキャブラリーが増えるとは。ご存知の通り、私はミーシャの語学発達にかなり興味があった。多言語で暮しているため、言葉が口から出てくるのは遅めの2歳頃だと思っていたけれど、酉年だからか、女の子だからか、そんなに遅くなかった（１言語の子供達は多言語より言葉が早い、女の子は男の子より早い）。「はいはい」と同じく、これも競争ではないから、その子それぞれのタイミングがある。心配はしていなかったけれど、今のところ、日本語の指示（本を持ってきて、というと自分の部屋の本棚から本をもってくる）は分かるし、エチオピア語も理解しているようだが、今まで出てきた言葉がすべて英語。これからどうなっていくか、楽しみなところ。

みんなのところの子供達はどんな言葉（単語）が最初だったのかな。

Shocking case

A little shocking case that came through our door 2 weeks ago - owner brought a recently adopted middle-sized adult dog to our teaching hospital because she was 'walking funny.' Of course we first thought it would probably be degenerative joint disease or something, but look how the xrays turned out! It was an old gunshot wound! Since it is completely healed and the leg is functional, there was nothing we treated that day, maybe recommended some anti-inflammatory meds in the future.

I know this is a very sensitive issue and I actually provoked a student, which ended up in a heated discussion with 3 other students, by saying 'Something has to be done.' Thinking about the Virginia Tech tragedy and last week's murder of 18 years old Tuekegee student, who was shot outside of the campus, I still believe something has be to done. As Chris Tucker said on the TV a while ago, it might be bullet-control rather than gun-control (he suggested people sell each bullet for $5,000 or so so that nobody will randomly shoot around), I am not sure, but all I am saying is that I do not want to see another cases like these.

上のレントゲン写真、後ろ足の太腿骨が折れているのがわかっただろうか。日本にいた頃の私なら、そこから先に進まなかっただろう・・・この骨折、典型的な銃弾によるパターンを表してるそうだ。このワンちゃんはいい飼い主さんに最近もらわれて、後ろ足がおかしいからと診察にきて発覚。 幸い、もう傷は治ってるし、足もどうにか使えるので今のところ特に処置は必要ないが、今週きた他のワンちゃんは手術となった。銃弾による骨折はあたった場所が粉々になるので、それを全部広い集めてもとの骨の形にするながーい手術になる。

そんな中、学生の待合室でふと横のコンピュータを見ると、銃の写真がずらり。学生がインターネットで銃のショッピングをしているのである。4月のバージニア・テック大学の悲劇、今週末のタスキギー大学生の銃殺（強盗事件）もあったため、「アメリカは何か対策を取らないと」と言ったら、ショッピングしていた学生がかちんと来たらしく、そこから他の学生も巻き込み、ヒートした大議論に発展。学生：「世界のほとんどの国の国民が銃を持っている」私：「たとえばどの国？」学生：「イラクとか」・・・いやいや、イラクは戦争中でしょう。患者が来てこの議論は終わったが、この状況をおかしいと思わない所が一番恐いと思う。

Update on Misha Girl - ミーシャ近況

So here is our Misha again... 'helping' me to mush some boiled pinto beans! Last Friday she had her 18 months checkup and got only one vaccine this time. She is now 24lbs 12oz,31 1/2 inches. Her recent favorites are boiled mini carrots, raisins, corn, cheese and green beans. She now says 'Anana' (banana) ,'Chees' (cheese), 'Plea' (please), and Peepee and Poopie. Her potty training has officially started, and although she still has some accidents here and there, it is going quite well. Freo (Temesgen's brother) and Genet (his wife) has been a tremendous help in this process.

Weather has been so nice (high: 80s) and Misha gets a lot of playtime outside. She is a very active girl, and see what happened to her (or my, actually) favorite shoes! I need to go shopping for her shoes soon.... shoes do not last so long any more!



最近のミーシャ：「お鼻を拭いて」とティッシュを手渡すと自分で鼻を拭く、床・テーブルの汚れをタオルでこする、それから日本の童謡の振り（大きなくりの木の下で、糸巻き巻き、げんこつ山の狸さん）が上手に出来るようになった。あんまりミーシャが、この童謡の本を持ってくるからか、鼻歌を口ずさむテメスゲンのメロディーが日本の童謡になっている。「夕焼け小焼け」だと哀愁もあるけれど、それが「ドラえもん」だったりすると吹き出しそうになってしまう。私の口調をまね、テメスゲンまでがミーシャに「お腹すいた？」「ご飯食べる？」と日本語で話しかけている。あれー、3ヶ国語教育計画はどこへやら。しかも咄嗟に彼の口から出たのは「あっち来て！」。いやいや、そうじゃなくて「あっちいって」「こっち来て」でしょう・・・

失敗はさておき、語学に強いテメスゲンのこと、ミーシャが小学校にあがるまでに、テメスゲンまで日本語ばりばりになりそうだ。

テメスゲンの弟（フレオ）と奥さん（ゲネット）の助けも借りて、「おむつさよなら作戦」もようやくスタート。失敗もあるが、まあまあ調子よく行っている。私は最近、毎日大学病院に行っているので（夏から小動物の外来担当臨床医として正式採用予定）午後はフレオ達がミーシャを保育所へ迎えに行ってくれる。フレオの大学院が始まるまでの間だけど、家族の輪が広がってとても嬉しい。サンディエゴでは部屋の数からして、長期間滞在してもらうことはできなかったから、いいタイミングだったと思う。

ミーシャの最近の好物はレーズン、コーン、ミニ・にんじんをゆでたもの。お天気がよくて、外の遊び時間も増え、夜もよく寝てくれるけれど、買って間もない靴に穴が・・・。軽くてお気に入りだったのに残念！夏だから、履きやすそうなサンダルでも買おうかな。
