キャラウェイ・ガーデン

そしてここは、農場にいった次の日（日曜日）にいったキャラウェイ・ガーデン。元は個人の所有地でしたが、今は自然教育や研究に使われています。1月2月は入場無料なので、我が家はいつもこの時期に行きます（笑）。これはバタフライ（喋々）ガーデンの前。

広い敷地内には散歩や自転車コース、ゴルフ場、そして人口湖まであります。こういう景色を見ると、十和田湖の奥入瀬に行きたくなるなー。

野鳥のショーもほぼ必ず寄ります。これはカリフォルニアでもよく見た赤い尾の鷹。この鷹は、道路脇に落ちていた食べかけのリンゴを食べようとして、トラックにはねられたそうです。

が、しかし・・・最後に登場した他の種類の鷹が、なんと木に飛んでいってしまいお兄さんの腕に戻ってこない！10分位待ちましたが、私達はエチオピア語レッスンのため退場。あの鷹、ちゃんと小屋に戻ったかな。

Birthday Cake

Another belated posting of the February event here. So for my birthday this year, we decided to bake King Cake since Mardi Gras was around that time. Baking is definitely one fot the pleasure I share with my girls. And of couse, Temesgen is the beneficiary! Have never heard of King Cake? Click here for explanation of King Cake.

これまた2月の出来事ですが、2月はバレンタインやリヤの誕生日で甘いものづくし。それで月末にやってくる私の誕生日はどうしようか、と思い、今年は南部、特にニューオーリンズで有名なキング・ケーキを作りました。3色の色、そして小さなお人形を入れるのが特徴です。日本語の説明はこちら。体も心も南部色に染まっていく・・・あ、皮下脂肪もか（笑）。

Red Root Organic Farm

So now that I have time (tax is done on my end, yeah!), I am posting events from February. My "grand birthday plan for 2012" included a visit to the organic farm, to which we subscribe a bag of vegetable for 30 weeks a year, and a nature walk at Calloway Garden. So on the Saturday afternoon, my family drove about 1.5 hours and visited the farm. Misha pulling rutabaga (sweeidhs turnip).

　Washing vegetables with water hose - finale of an hour long fun! We will be visiting the farm again as a part of field trip from my Sunday class in April. Cannot wait!

Sorry for the long silence - I was occupied with a-month-long translation assignment, my birthday, and spring break to name a few (did I mention tax preparation, too?). Anyhow, this video clip is from the latest performance of the drum group, named Potluck Drum Choir (PLDC) at a local bike event. We cheered bikers for 3, 8, 20, and 30 miles as they took off. Temesgen, Misha and Liya also participated and completed the 3-mile-ride! They also enjoyed helmet and bike decorations, scavenger hunt, and door prizes. Isn't it time to dust off your bike, too !?! 「余裕の2月」だったはずが、1ヶ月に渡る翻訳が入り、それに誕生日やミーシャの学校のボランティア等が重なり、ブログを更新する暇なく時間が過ぎてしまいました。そんな中、これは先週末、自転車イベントでジンベを披露したときのもの。このイベントにはテメスゲンと子供達も参加し、無事3マイル（5キロ弱）を完走しました。リヤは3マイル・チームの「どべ」でしたが、何事もやりぬくことに意義がある！お母さんも太っていた小学・中学時代は「どべ」がほとんどだったよ（笑）。

　会場にはヘルメットやバイクを飾るコンテスト、宝物さがし、お昼にはハンバーガーを頂き、春陽気の中、楽しい時間を過ごしました。

　去年の1月にはじめたのは、エチオピア語のレッスンとジンベのレッスン。ない時間と頭をひねって、細々と続けております。このビデオは友人へのビデオ・メッセージに含んだ一コマ。テメスゲンのサッカーと重なるため、いつも最後の半分しか出れないこのレッスンだけど、昨日は少し難しくてしょげていたら、娘たちが「今度一緒に連れて行ってよ！リズム聞いて教えてあげるから。大丈夫だよ！」と激励。最近、リヤにも「歯磨きはブラシでもっと小さな円を描かないとだめだ」とアドバイスを受けたし、娘たちよ、母は心強い！でも、その調子で後片付けもしてもらえると嬉しいんだけどね。

Happy Valentine's Day

[Valentine Express] Since the summer of 2011, I have been co-teaching the pre-K class at Religeous Education on Sundays at fellowship. This year, it has been powered up by the joining of Amy, one of the most creative people I know. This Valentine Express, which kids and adults make valentines cards,is an annual tradition at RE program, and defeinitely, one of my most favorite Sundays of the year. フェローシップの日曜学校（幼児）を教えるようになって２年目。去年はいろいろスムーズに行かないこともありましたが、今年は尊敬するエイミーさんと一緒に担当させていただくことになり、安心＋楽しんでます。彼女は陶芸、舞台服飾等、ほんとうにクリエイティブ！創造性というニューロンが脳に存在しない私には、本当に力強いです（笑）。この写真は毎年恒例の、バレンタイン・エクスプレス：大人もまじって、バレンタインのカードを作ります。このカードは後に一枚２ドルで売られ、収益金の半分はREプログラムに、残りの半分は生徒が選んだチャリティーに寄付されます。私たちのクラスは、200㌦を動物シェルターに寄付しました。

For someone who did not grow up in the "American" valentine tradition, making a valentine box is new. This is our first valentine box ever and Misha and I had fun making it. And later on, it earned the "Best Show Box" medal! I got so excited (arts and crafts are definitely one of my weakest areas), but Misha said everyone got a medal of some sort. Oh well.... アメリカのバレンタインは、大人の男性が女性にバラの花やチョコレート等、プレゼントを送るほか、子供たちもクラスメートに小さなカードと共に飴やお菓子を贈ります。これまではデイケアから「バレンタインのパーティーをするので、XXを持ってきてください」というリクエストだけで済んでいましたが、今年はミーシャの学校から「バレンタイン・ボックスのコンテストをするので、XX日までに持ってきてください。ルールは靴の空き箱を使用し、ハート型を３つどこかにつけること、そして子供が必ず手伝うこと。」と書いた手紙が。子供が手伝う、といういうことは・・・親がほとんど作れって事かい!?!　工作不得手な私は、完全無視していましたが、ミーシャから「しめきりが近いから、作らないといけない！」催促が。ということで、作りましたがな！私はナイキの靴箱に紙を張るだけ、後はミーシャが広告を切ったり、絵を描いたりして仕上げました。後日、このバレンタイン・ボックスになんと「ベスト・ショー・ボックス」賞！工作で何か賞をもらうなんて、３７年の人生で初！と喜んだのもほんの２－３秒。横からミーシャが「うちのクラスはみんな賞もらったんだよ」がくーん！ま、小学校の夏休みの工作も何年か連続で、８月３１日の夜に母がつくる「動物園」だったからね。しょうがないや。
